The title of this video, La Main vide (The Empty Hand), comes from the etymology of the word karate, composed of the Japanese words kara (“empty”) and te (“hand”).
Shot in a Parisian karate club in the 13th arrondissement, the video follows the training of karatekas. The focus is on their learning, on perfecting their technique, on the precision and mastery of their gestures, isolated or intersecting with others, from life, forming a choreography.
I wanted to use my residency in Stuttgart to produce a new video portrait of a dancer. I didn’t know which dancer or dance I was going to film, or whether my approach would be historical or observational. Everything had to be developed once I was on site.
Prior to that, I had to find a dance class to get things started. I discovered Produktionszentrum, a venue that offers weekly training courses for professional dancers. They agreed to let me take lessons as an amateur. The first class I attended was run by Selina Koch. I was so struck by her strength and power that I immediately wanted to film her. Shortly after I talked to her, the project started. For several few weeks, I was able to follow her with my camera, filming her work as choreographer and dancer during personal performance projects and other dance projects. From the scenes captured during these rehearsals and performances I was able to create a portrait of Selina at work.
The exhibition is the result of a three-month residency at the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg in Stuttgart. Alongside the film, I present a set of drawings and gouaches that I produced as part of my daily studio practice.

Clodette Forever is a portrait of dancer Ketty Sina, who began her career in the late 1970s dancing alongside singer Claude François. Through the story of her career, the film takes us on a journey through the video archives of TV shows and cabarets of the 70s and 80s.
Today, it is in stagings now orchestrated by herself, that she organizes shows in her restaurant in the 13th arrondissement of Paris.

Le Moindre geste was filmed in the Orchestre d’Harmonie de Thiviers in the Périgord region of France, a music ensemble composed of amateur musicians and directed by a professional conductor. It is in this non-elitist musical context, where music is open to all, that bodies and gestures were filmed with a sensitive approach. Following in particular the transmission of the conductor’s skills to a young musician, the film shows how a conductor can acquire the right posture for his role in front of the musicians.
With Chloé Meyzie, Hugo Gatto and Thiviers Orchestra.
With support of DRAC Île-de-France, Communauté de Communes Périgord-Limousin and Conseil Départemental de la Dordogne.
Exhibition curated by Rafaël Gray
“L’Enfer du Nord” is the nickname of one of the oldest French bicycle races, the Paris-Roubaix. The day before the professional race, the amateur race is held. The film focuses on the participation of three visual artists in this legendary race, with the aim of achieving the best possible performance.
The film L’Enfer du Nord follows this performance, from the enthusiasm of the start, through the roads and setbacks, to the finish line at the Roubaix velodrome.
With Alexandre Barth and Team Landscape (Nicolas Beaumelle and Aurélien Porte).

Blues Dance is a performance that takes place on a roof, a place in suspension above the city. Two dancers interpret a choreography written from the gaze that leads to movement and then to imbalance. The choreography is conceived according to the place. The sounds of the city, the wind, the sun, are mixed with the dance.

During a scientific mission on board a sailboat, the gestures of bodies at work, observation and waiting, become choreography. Hands, bodies, tools, ropes and sails are filmed to the rhythm of waves, pitching and rolling. In this restricted space, which requires a permanent rebalancing, putting the foot on the ground becomes an almost unreal moment, as if out of time.
Filmed on board the Schooner Tara, during Méditerranée Expedition in 2014.

Martita is the portrait of Martita Loubrieux, dancer with a long career who gives ballet classes in Paris, away from the usual teaching codes. We follow her during a class in her gestures and movements on a soundtrack played and recorded by herself.
Accompanied by her castanets like a conductor’s baton, her uncluttered silhouette gives rhythm to the music and to the steps of her students, combining lightness and high standards.
